Code of Conduct
Philosophy
Discipline is a daily part of teaching each student to honour God through his or her behaviour.
As faculty and Board members, those exercising authority, it is our responsibility to provide a safe and orderly environment where children can learn scholastically, emotionally and spiritually.
We will provide a disciplined environment based on love, justice and responsibility, with consistency. Our children must experience love through our actions; both encouragement and correction. They must learn to take responsibility and bear the consequences of actions taken.
As those in authority, our responsibility is to train our children, not to provoke our children to wrath. We will encourage and train our students by planning positively for discipline, being prepared every day for the task ahead. We will plan ahead for activities and pre-think areas of possible difficulties, so that through training and prevention, we can avoid problems. We will also take into account the gradual process that helps a child grow into a self-controlled individual.
Policy
All students are expected to display Christ-like behaviour in the following ways:
- Respect those in authority over you by being obedient and respectful.
- Show kindness and compassion to one another.
- Be sensitive to other people's feelings by the things you say and do.
- Respect self and others, other people's belongings, the school building and property.
- The school uniform must be worn neatly and appropriately.
- Dress neatly and modestly in accordance with the Dress Code, which includes modesty in hair, makeup and jewelry.
- Remain quiet while instruction is being given.
- Give your best effort at your schoolwork by completing assignments and homework on time.
- Students are not permitted to be involved in dating relationships or conversation and letters that relate to this.
- Students are not permitted to be involved in bartering, selling, giving or taking belongings of another student.
- Students are not permitted to have inappropriate conversations and make suggestive comments whether in person, on the telephone or on the internet.
The Bible provides clear instruction on how we are to conduct ourselves. In Philippians 4:8, we are instructed that, "Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things."
Staff Commitment to Parents and Students
- It is the heart's desire of the staff of Calvary Christian School to recognize and praise good behaviour and develop school programs that encourage this behaviour.
- It is the staffs' desire to train the students and prevent poor behaviour situations at school.
- The staff is also committed to the partnership of family and school with ongoing communication and suggestions concerning student conduct.
Steps that will be taken if Behaviour Code is not followed:
- The teacher will make every effort to determine why the student is not complying and attempt to correct the problem.
- If the problem isn't solved, the student will be asked to leave the room for a period of time or an appropriate privilege will be withheld. After that time, the Behaviour Code will be reviewed with the student and he will return to the room.
- If the code of conduct is not followed, the following consequences may be administered: line writing, during and after school detention, in-school suspensions etc.
- In the case of a continued problem, the teacher will then establish a meeting with the parents and student.
- If the behaviour continues, the principal will be notified and will arrange a meeting with the teacher, parent/guardian(s) and student to discuss strategies to correct the behaviour problem. The student will be warned that non-compliance with the rules will result in an out of school suspension.
- If the behaviour continues after the suspension, the principal will consult with the School Board regarding expulsion from the school.
It is understood that the length of time spent on each step will vary depending on the type of behaviour and the attitude of the student.
*The following behaviours would result in a student being suspended and/or a student being expelled:
- persistent opposition to authority
- habitual neglect of duty
- willful destruction of school property
- use of profane language
- violence (zero tolerance)
- any conduct injurious to the moral tone of the school
- any form of bullying or consistent disrespect of fellow students.
Also note that the school reserves the right to accept, reject, retain or expel any student at any time during the school year, for the well being of other students, teachers, or the school's reputation as it sees fit without prior notice. Grounds for expulsion include, but are not limited to: the use, sale or purchase of illegal substances, any other criminal activity, possession of any sort of a weapon at school (including a knife), physical, verbal or emotional abuse of school staff or students; malicious damage of property; truancy; use of alcohol or tobacco at school; drunkenness; theft; and vandalism.
The school reserves the right to search and remove a student's belongings from desk or knapsack without prior notice.
It is our constant desire and aim to provide a safe and happy environment where the students are encouraged to be responsible persons working in a Christ-like manner.
Parent/guardians and student will read and sign the Code of Conduct.
Student Guidelines
Guidelines and rules are given for the well being of the student. A well-disciplined classroom creates the best environment for learning. God expects us to live by certain guidelines outlined in His Word. Since we are responsible as a school to God and to parents, these guidelines have been set to give order to the school and to the lives of the student.
Acts of intentional disobedience, cheating, lying, vandalism, swearing, stealing or violence will not be tolerated. Physical contact is strictly forbidden. These will be dealt with in accordance with the discipline policy.
Church and School Building
- Students are to remain in the school area of the building. All other areas are off limits to students.
- At times, church members use the school building during school hours. Students are to be courteous and respectful to all people they encounter in the hallways or on school grounds.
- Students must walk at all times inside the building.
- Paper towels and toilet paper sparingly must be used sparingly.
- Bathrooms must be left clean.
- Students must enter the school building quietly and remain quiet in the hallways.
- Students must keep hands and feet off the walls.
- The school phone may be used after obtaining permission from a teacher. The phone in the hallway outside the grade one/two room is the Church phone and is off limits.
- Radios, walkmans, cell phones and video games are to be left at home.
- Playing cards are discouraged on school property.
- Toys are to be left at home unless requested by the teacher or it is an outside toy that will be used during recesses.
- During recess, permission must be obtained to re-enter the school building before the end of recess.
Classrooms
- Desks are to be kept clean.
- Do not keep anything of value in desks.
- Students may leave the classroom only after receiving permission from the teacher. They are to go directly to their destination and return directly. Do not loiter in the hallways.
- Writing on or defacing desks or equipment will not be tolerated.
- Paper on the floor should be picked up and disposed properly in the garbage.
- Lunches are to eaten in the classroom in a quiet, mannerly fashion. Snacks are not to be eaten in hallways or washrooms. Gum chewing is prohibited on school grounds and in the school building.
Outside
- Garbage should be picked up and disposed of in the garbage can.
- The school boundaries outside the building consist of the paved area and grass area directly behind the school. The parking area beyond the orange pylons, the bush area, the trees and the seniors' housing are off limits.
- When the whistle blows for end of recess or beginning of school - all students will line up. All students are expected to stand quietly until each line is chosen to enter the building.
- Students will enter the building quietly and go directly to their classroom. If a student needs to use the washroom, they are to go to their classroom first and receive permission.
- On rainy days, students may stand inside by the back hall entrance. They will be dismissed to their rooms at 8:45 AM. Go directly to your classroom.
- Bikes are to be in the bike rack and are not to be ridden during recess time.
- The outside of the building and the property are to be treated with respect.
- Students enter/exit at all times by the north door unless accompanied by parent/guardian.
